With German vehicles, you may notice as brakes are wearing down that there is a lot of dust involved. This is actually normal – Vehicle brands like Mercedes Benz, Volkswagens, and BMWS incorporate softer compounds in their brakes that allow your brake pads to stick better to your rotors. This gives you enhanced stopping power but as you may have noticed, it comes with a bit more brake dust.
At Louden Motorcar Services, we’re well aware of issues like this and equipped to provide full service repair and preventative maintenance for your brakes or any other part of your German vehicle that needs it. Here are some examples of common brake issues that we deal with all of the time:
Inspecting brake pads on a regular basis helps to keep trouble away and replacing them is a piece of cake – provided that you don’t wait to get your brakes serviced for too long.
Excessive braking can generate a lot of friction and heat, and with many European vehicles this can lead to rotor warping. Symptoms include vibrations in the brake pedal and uneven stopping and this can get a whole lot worse if you don’t get your brakes checked right away. Caught early, resurfacing the rotors may be all that is needed, but replacing them is also a possibility if enough damage has already been done.
Brake electrical systems are another issue that is common with European vehicles, which often have antilock brakes and Electronic Stability Control systems that are there to enhance your braking. Whether it’s a faulty sensor or a whole module that needs to be replaced, at Louden Motorcars we can diagnose what’s going on and get your brake system back to peak performance.

Calipers are generally going to last between 75,000 and 100,000 miles, although you also need to factor in things like local climate and weather factors, driving styles, and whether or not regular preventative maintenance is being kept up with to ensure that the brake system is at its best.
With routine inspections and proper maintenance, you can get closer to the 100,00 mile mark and perhaps a little beyond, but if you’ve been neglecting that part of vehicle ownership then you might get a whole lot less!
Your brake pads will usually need to be replaced between 10,000 and 20,000 miles, although you’ll want to defer to your manufacturer’s recommendations unless you have a bit of a heavy foot when it comes to the brakes.
Regular checkups are a good idea even if you don’t ride them, however, as they are arguably one of the most important safety features of your vehicle.
Pads, shoes, calipers, rotors, and drums… There’s a lot to your brake system that needs to be maintained in order to ensure that you’re got granular control and stopping power when you need it. Inspection comes first with any repair work, followed by recommendations for what needs to be done and whether or not the brake fluid might need to be flushed for good measure.
It’s like any other repair in that regard – the purpose is to ensure that the system is running as efficiently as possible – although regular preventative maintenance will keep the most expensive repairs at bay.
